We did it – together! 🌿

STAND WITH THE SWAMPS!

Throughout the Green Friday weekend (28-30.11), every purchase in the SWAMP SHOP and every Cumulus® product you chose gained extra power and turned into real action for nature.

Thanks to your support, we raised ~20,000 euros to protect wild places, and the Wetlands Conservation Centre already has its eye on specific plots in the Rospuda Valley that it plans to buy.

1% FOR THE PLANET

The Swamp it up campaign is part of our long-term efforts.

In 2019, we joined the 1% for the Planet initiative and since then we have been donating 1% of the revenue from the sale of all our products to support organisations working to protect the environment.

Rospuda holds one of the last large, well-preserved rich percolation fens in Central Europe. This type of wetland has almost disappeared elsewhere because of drainage and development. Water still moves through the valley the way it has for centuries, which is rare in a world of canals and ditches.

WETLANDS ARE DISAPPEARING FAST!

Since 1970, the planet has lost about 35% of natural wetlands (where data exists), from a global base of roughly 1.2 billion hectares. When you save a swamp now, you’re protecting something the world is running out of:

CUMULUS-Swamp_it_up-carbon locked

CARBON KEPT UNDERGROUND

Over centuries, plants in peatlands don’t fully decompose. Their carbon stays locked underground as peat. Drain or destroy a peatland and that stored carbon escapes as CO₂. Keep it wet and it stays put. Peatlands are among nature’s most efficient climate vaults, they cover ~3% of land but store roughly twice the carbon of all the world’s forests. Let’s keep Rospuda Valley’s vault locked.

CUMULUS-Swamp_it_up-flood defence

FLOOD DEFENCE YOU CAN WALK ON

When storms hit, healthy peatlands hold water in place. They soak up rain, slow down rivers, and spread water safely across floodplains. After the peak, they release it slowly, cutting flood height and damage. Concrete channels rush water through; wetlands calm it at the source – and they don’t need electricity to work.

CUMULUS-Swamp_it_up-cooler summers

COOLER SUMMERS, FEWER MEGAFIRES

Moist ground and green belts work as fire breaks and safe zones for people and wildlife. Europe faces record heat and longer fire seasons: wildfires have already burned 400,000+ hectares this year, ~87% above the 20-year average for the same period. Protect the water in the landscape, and you lower the chance of it going up in flames.

CUMULUS-Swamp_it_up-homes for life

HOMES FOR LIFE

Wetlands are nurseries for fish, birds, amphibians, insects, and rare plants. Shallow water, reeds, and mossy mats create countless micro-habitats.Many species rely on wetlands for breeding and migration. Around 40% of all plant and animal species depend on wetlands; about 30% of known fish species live or breed there.

Lynx

ROSPUDA VALLEY

The peatlands around the Rospuda River are home to dozens of strictly protected plant species (like “miodokwiat krzyżowy” / Herminium monorchis - it is the only place in Poland where you can find it), plus rare birds, orchids, beavers, and large mammals like lynx and wolves in the wider forest.

CUMULUS-Swamp_it_up-time outdoors

HERITAGE AND TIME OUTDOORS

Wetlands hold stories and traditions as well as water. From berry picking to birdwatching, they’re places to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the wild. With smart trails and quiet zones, they support health and gentle local tourism, without heavy footprints.

Swamp it up - splash

WE’VE ALREADY MADE A SPLASH!

  • In 2022, the Wetlands Conservation Centre purchased the first 4 plots in Rospuda Valley, ~3 hectares of top-priority peatland.

  • Since then, more donors have joined. Together, they now have 14 plots, covering over 8.5 hectares.

  • They're also the owner of Wolf Swamp located in the buffer zone of Biebrza National Park.
