COMFORT temperature

The Comfort rating indicates the lowest temperature at which a sleeper can rest in a relaxed position (typically lying on their back) and remain in overall thermal balance, not feeling cold. It reflects conditions where you can expect a genuinely restful night, wearing typical sleep base layers.

BEST FOR: General use and those who tend to feel the cold more easily (or just want a reliable margin). If comfort is your top priority, this is the most reliable reference point.

LIMIT temperature

The Limit rating refers to the lowest temperature at which a standard warm sleeper (typically defined as a man in testing standards) can sleep through the night without feeling uncomfortably cold. It assumes a more heat-conserving posture (often curled up) and thermal balance that’s functional, but not necessarily cozy.

BEST FOR: More experienced outdoor users or warm sleepers looking to reduce weight by opting for a slightly less insulated bag. It’s a popular choice for minimalists who know their limits.

EXTREME temperature

The Extreme rating defines the lowest temperature at which the sleeping bag will keep you alive in an emergency situation. It’s not intended for regular use and assumes the sleeper is curled up in a position that conserves body heat. You’re unlikely to sleep well but you can avoid life-threatening hypothermia.

BEST FOR: Understanding the bag's absolute limits in emergencies. The extreme rating is not recommended for regular use; it’s more of a survival benchmark.

WHY ARE THERE RATINGS...

Basically, this is because, on average, women tend to feel cold sooner than men in the same conditions. Of course, there are plenty of exceptions (some women run hot, some men are always freezing), but statistically, several physiological factors matter:

BODY SIZE AND SURFACE AREA

Smaller bodies often have a higher surface-area-to-mass ratio, which can mean faster heat loss. Many women are smaller on average, so they may cool down more quickly inside the same sleeping bag.

CIRCULATION AND EXTREMITIES

Many women report colder hands and feet. Differences in circulation and the way blood flow is distributed can make extremities feel cold even when the core is okay… and let’s be honest: cold hands and feet are a classic sleep-killer.

FAT DISTRIBUTION

Body fat insulates, but where it’s distributed matters. More insulation around hips and thighs doesn’t always help hands, feet, or shoulders, and these are often the first areas to feel chilly in a sleeping bag.

Even if we account for tough, realistic conditions when setting temperature ranges, the outdoors is full of variables. While rating is a baseline, your real warmth depends on the full system and the environment. Here are the biggest factors that can make a night feel dramatically colder than the number on the tag:

WIND: WHEN THE BREEZE BITES

You stay warm in a sleeping bag thanks to a stable layer of warm air around your body. That layer is maintained by loft (down insulation) and fabrics with relatively low air permeability. Strong wind can strip away that warm layer, especially if:

  • You’re under a tarp with poor wind protection

  • Your tent is very drafty or badly pitched

  • Part of your sleeping bag is pressed against a cold tent wall

Even if the air temperature matches the Comfort rating, a strong wind can make you feel like you’re below Limit.

WHAT HELPS? Choosing sheltered campsites (behind rocks, trees, terrain dips) and using a tarp or tent with good wind protection. For extra security in exposed conditions, an ultralight bivy can make a real difference.

MOISTURE AND HUMIDITY: WHEN LOFT DROPS, WARMTH DROPS

Down loses loft as it absorbs moisture from the air, and as your bag becomes thinner, you feel colder. Add evaporative cooling (moisture evaporating from your body) and the fact that water conducts heat far better than air, and suddenly “mild” night can feel really cold.

That’s why you’ll feel much colder if:

Your base layers are damp from sweat or rain

Your sleeping bag is slightly wet from condensation or a previous night

Air is very humid and cool (common near lakes, rivers, and the coast).

DID YOU KNOW? At night, while sleeping on a dock over a lake, the humidity can reach close to 100% even with no rainfall. And in deep winter, moisture matters too! At -30°C, the humidity in a tent can rise significantly from breathing and cooking.

WHAT HELPS?

  • Change into truly dry sleep layers before getting into the bag

  • Air the sleeping bag whenever the sun appears (turning it inside out is a great habit, especially with moisture-protective outer fabrics)

EXHAUSTION, HUNGER AND DEHYDRATION

Your sleeping bag doesn’t generate heat, it keeps heat in. If your body is running low, even a warm bag can feel cold. That is why, you’ll feel colder if:

You’re over-fatigued after a massive day of hiking or climbing

You haven’t eaten enough, especially fats and carbs

You’re dehydrated (which affects circulation and metabolism)

WHAT HELPS?

  • Eat a small, calorie-dense snack (nuts, cheese, chocolate, energy bar) before bed

  • Drink something warm (not too much water right before sleep, or you’ll be up all night)

  • Avoid getting into the bag already shivering

PRO TIP: Fitness matters. The better prepared you are physically, the less likely you are to hit the tent completely depleted.

THE GROUND

Sometimes the forecast is wrong. Maybe the altitude “bites” harder than expected. Or you just realized you sleep colder than you thought. The good news: you’ve got options. Here are practical ways to raise your comfort temperature when you’re already out there:

Use a hot water bottle in your sleeping bag (a classic trick that works incredibly well!):

Boil water and let it cool slightly

Fill a sturdy leak-proof bottle

Double-check the seal

Wrap it in a sock or shirt

Place near your feet or core (stomach/lower back)

This preheats the insulation and helps you warm up quickly!

Add a sleeping bag liner:

A synthetic liner can add a few degrees and keep the inside of your bag cleaner. Plus it’s easy to wash separately, which helps extend your bag’s life.

Wear smart layers (without crushing loft)

More layers don’t always mean more warmth, as too much bulk can compress insulation. Definitely, avoid going to sleep in damp hiking clothes, even if you feel warm at first, you’ll cool down later in the night.

A solid approach:
Dry long-sleeve base layer (top + bottom)

Warm socks reserved only for sleep

Light hat or beanie (the head leaks heat fast)

If it’s truly cold, add an insulated jacket or down pants, just make sure the bag can still loft properly around you.

Reduce dead air space (but don’t strangle the bag)

You want enough room to move, but not so much empty space that your body has to heat a “cathedral” of air. To properly dial it in:

Use the hood and draft collar to seal warmth around head/neck

If the footbox has extra space, stuff spare clothes or a down jacket there
